Ferrell-Duncan Clinic is far more than a title on a building that houses some of Springfield’s most respected specialty physicians. Ferrell and Duncan are the legacy behind this clinic. Dr. Thomas E. Ferrell, Jr. and Dr. Robert D. Duncan are its founders. They were life-long mentors and examples by which today’s practitioners are guided. They are also the namesakes of the Ferrell-Duncan Clinic Foundation which continues their work of caring for the community through charitable support.
The History of Dr.’s Ferrell and Duncan

Dr. Robert D. Duncan, MD
In 1944, Dr. Robert Duncan owed the Public Health Service two years of his time for funding his medical education at the University of California at San Francisco Medical School. He was assigned to the Federal Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri to start a surgical practice.
During these two years he met Dr. Thomas E. Ferrell, a solo practicing general surgeon with a large patient caseload. Having mutual respect for each other’s skills, Dr. Ferrell invited Dr. Duncan to “moonlight” and help him out. In 1946 when Dr. Duncan had paid his debt of service, Dr. Ferrell invited him to join his practice.

The two were a great fit for they both loved learning, were incredibly innovative for their time and always put the patient first.
In a short period of time, these talented surgeons were able to attract other sought after physicians for the growing region. The two person physician clinic recruited top quality doctors as they built the iconic multi-specialty practice serving Springfield and Southwest Missouri today.
